Rav Machlis
Tonight Rav Machlis came to YU. While numerously offering his own seat to others, and stoping to say Hello to each of his Talmidim as they walked in, He spoke about the Mitzvah of Hadlakos Neros and that we do mehadrin min hamehadrin and light a total of 36 candles over the holy days of Chanukah. However, if a Jew, who is out there and is needy of a candle, we should not hesitate to find him and give him and not fulfill mehadrin min hamehadrin. But this is not only giving him a candle, it is also lending him a spiritual hand, giving over a little bit of ourselves to those who are in need of a spiritual lifting. This is Chanukah.
At the end of the shiur, i went up to him and told him who i was. I related to him that i was by him late purim night with Rav Judah while things were winding down, i found myself doing the dishes with someone i didnt know. he then told me torah about dishes.
"Doing dishes is like teshuvah, when they get dirty all you gotta do is wash them off...Laundry too, when the clothes get dirty...."
and that was it. simple, yet life changing.
